Foundation stone laid for new bridge in Panaji

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar recently laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new cantilever bridge across the Rua de Ourem creek. The ceremony was held in the presence of Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Panaji MLA and chairman EDC Sidharth Kuncalienkar; Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (GSIDC) chairman and MLA Sankhali constituency Dr Pramod Sawant; Corporation of the City of Panaji Mayor Surendra Furtado; former Mayor Shubham Chodankar; managing director of GSIDC & CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues, present and past councillors, officials of the state government, GSIDC and Larsen & Toubro, prominent citizens and other invitees.

The two-lane 103 metre long bridge, which will connect Mala with Patto Plaza over the creek, was envisioned by Parrikar in his budget speech during his tenure as chief minister and is being executed by the GSIDC. Parrikar said, “Its a happy day to see the foundation stone being laid for this bridge connecting Patto to Neuginagar over the Rua de Ourem creek. I have requested that this bridge be completed by later this year.”

Parsekar added, “The BJP government has always laid emphasis and priority on infrastructure and connectivity. This bridge is another example of this vision of the Defence Minister and former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, which we are carrying forward.”

Panaji MLA and vice-chairman GSIDC Sidharth Kuncalienkar said that the three-span pre-stressed continuous bridge will not only help cut down the distance to Panaji city by as much as 1.5 kms, but will also reduce traffic in and around the Kadamba inter-state bus stand area, provide a direct connection to residents of Mala, Fontainhas, Bhatlem and Taleigao and eliminate the existing vehicular load on the old Patto bridge.
