COOJ Mental Health Foundation reaches out to save lives with its suicide prevention programme

The loss of someone dear – whatever the cause of death – can bring intense feelings of grief. But losing someone through suicide can cause reactions and emotions different to those felt after death from illness, an accident or natural causes. It raises many questions as to why the person took such a drastic step.

Did they try to hint us, and were we just too busy and never really paid close attention to what they had to say? There could be many evolving factors as it is not entirely clear as to why suicide is such a stubborn social phenomenon.

Approximately, 1 million people die each year from suicide according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The question is what drives so many individuals to take their own lives? Is the thought of dying within one’s control and will, or is it a result of a mind that is not able to perceive all options to life?

The WHO World Suicide Report 2014 clearly shows that suicide most often is a result of a psychological illness, with depression being the forerunner of causes. Harmful use of alcohol increases the risk of a person dying by suicide by five times. Youth suicides are often not planned, but impulsive.
