There are many reasons for spontaneous pregnancy loss and it is rarely a woman’s fault

If Cinderella had to miss her carriage at the stroke of midnight, it would have spelt disaster for her. Things have not changed since the times of fairytales for women who want to have a baby yet suffer a miscarriage and at times have repeated pregnancy loss.

While 80 per cent of miscarriages occur before 12 weeks, some can happen up to 20 weeks as well.

By definition, recurrent pregnancy loss means three or more consecutive pregnancy losses. However, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine has redefined it as two or more pregnancy losses.

There are various reasons why recurrent pregnancy loss occurs. The problem can be with either partner, though it is usually the woman who is eventually blamed. She also bears the brunt of physical, emotional and social trauma.
