Vedanta launches Goa Women’s Football League

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar recently launched the first Women’s Football League at Vivanta by Taj, Panaji.

The league is an initiative of the Goa Football Association (GFA) and Vedanta. The launch coincides with the day Goa were crowned women’s national champions in 1977 for the first time nearly four decades ago.
Parrikar appealed to all to leave aside their differences and work for the betterment of the game. “Football is my love and I will support it,” he said, adding that Indian football requires a lot of energy to cross the threshold. He suggested that Goa needs to improve on techniques
and training.
CEO of Vedanta Sesa Goa (Iron Ore) Kishore Kumar said, “We have received a tremendous response for the women’s league. The enthusiasm seen at the ground level for this initiative is very evident. Vedanta, with the help of Goa Football Association, wants to promote the sport and encourage women. We currently have only one Goan woman player representing the sport on the national scene and intend to triple it. Our commitment to honing women’s skill and empowering them through this platform intends to take women’s football to the top 10 ranks on the national scene.”
GFA president Elvis Gomes said the league would promote the Goan football eco-system at large.
Veteran women football players were felicitated. Vijayadevi Rane, past president of the Goa Women’s Football Association in 1977, stressed the importance of tapping talent at the school level to achieve
better results.
Juliana Gurjao e Colaco, chairperson of GFA’s Women’s Committee, said that women players in the league are the future champions of Goa
and India.
Arjuna Awardee and former India captain Brahmanand Sankhwalkar adviced players to sacrifice for the cause of football and said that the league would be a supply chain of players in the future for the Indian football team.
The Women’s Football League  begins on November 18 at the Duler Football Stadium, Mapusa. The six participating teams are Flaming Orange, Panjim Dolphins, Cuncolim Warriors, SCC Sows Football, Goa Velha Saints and Albert’s Princesses (Albert Developers SC).
