Yash Fadte

Junior International squash player

Hailing from a family of cricketers, Yash Fadte, 16, has broken traditions and taken a sporting U-turn.

The Vasco-based Class 11 student is one of the country’s top players in the junior segment. He was the youngest to be selected to play for India at the U-19 World Junior Squash Championships and the U-17 Asian Junior Championships. Fadte is determined to make Goa known on world squash map.

He speaks to VIVA GOA about his future plans…

I started paying squash...

With my father Dilip Fadte. He was a Ranji player for Goa, and my uncle Namdev Fadte also played cricket for Goa. Even my twin brother Om plays for the Goa U-16 team. After my father retired, he played squash for fitness, and since the age of seven I went to watch him play. My family expected me to take up cricket because of my background, but at age eight I told my father I wanted to play squash.

My training schedule...

Includes squash in the morning during vacations and holidays, or cycling, swimming or jogging. In the evenings, I play squash for about 2-3 hours. My father is my coach. I have received membership at the prestigious Cricket Club of India’s squash facility in Mumbai which is hard to get. So I travel every Saturday to Mumbai, play on the weekend and return on Sunday.
