Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown has improved basic sanitation and clean water facilities for more than 10,000 students across Goa

More than 10,000 children in Goa have benefitted from the Rotary International’s clean water project WinS – Wash (WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene) in Schools. The project has been implemented in 26 rural and urban schools in Goa through Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown.

Led by president Ashish Prabhu Verlekar, 2017-2018 the club upholds the UNICEF and central government ideal that access to drinking water and sanitation are integral to the development of society.

Across Goa, 26 schools from Canacona to Pernem, Vasco to Valpoi, Panaji to Poingiunim, Divar, Dharbandora, Mapusa and St Cruz including five for special children and one for visually impaired children have been covered under the programme, bringing the number of beneficiaries up to 10,000. The first two schools covered under the project – one in Panaji and the other in Priol – were completed last year.

The team initially identified schools based on a needs assessment survey, following which they began providing water, hygiene and sanitation facilities. The process involved repairs, renovation and construction of separate toilet blocks for boys and girls, installing hand wash stations with soap and safe drinking water facilities, as well as  incinerators and vending machines for menstrual hygiene.

This project comes as a relief for schools across the state, who often complain of poor government funding for basic infrastructure. The first two schools covered under the project were completed last year and were inaugurated by governor Dr (Mrs)Mruidula Sinha at Swastik Vidyalaya in Priol and chief minister Manohar Parrikar at Progress High School in Panaji. Last year, during the launch, Parrikar in an inspiring address laced with practical everyday examples asked all to stress on the theme of water, hygiene, sanitation in our society. He congratulated Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown for initiating and executing the Wash IN Schools project and extented his government’s support in this initiative for the club.
