Is your t-shirt killing the ocean?

Choosing the wrong fabrics when shopping can cause irreversible damage to the earth’s water bodies, in turn poisoning the food and water you consume

Have you ever put on your favourite piece of clothing and wondered where it came from and where it was going? Looking into the raw origins of clothing, their methods of disposal, and even their life cycle as you wear them can open a rather revolting can of worms. Your t-shirt could, in fact, be killing the planet.

Mainstream fashion pushes large volumes of clothing at affordable prices, often by using synthetic materials. Many of these are combined with cotton to create more breathable and comfortable fabrics. But behind these glitzy and gorgeous materials lie a pretty sinister past and a rather bleak future.

Synthetic fabrics – such as rayon, nylon, polyester and even the wonder invention spandex – are most commonly made of plastic, that non-biodegradable go-to product spawned from petroleum, our favourite non-renewable, energy-spewing fossil fuel.
