Goa wins national tourism award

Goa was recently presented an award for Comprehensive Development of Tourism (Rest of India) for 2016-17 at the National Tourism Awards (NTA) in New Delhi. This is the second consecutive year that Goa has won this award.

The award was presented by Union minister for Tourism Alphons Kannanthanam and Tourism secretary Rashmi Verma to Goa Tourism minister Manohar Ajgaonkar, Goa Tourism Development Corporation managing director Nikhil Desai at a ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan on World Tourism Day last month.

The awards have been presented since 1990 to states, union territories and tourism bodies in recognition of their performance in travel, tourism and hospitality, encouraging healthy competition to promote tourism.

Goa’s selection comes as a result of a well-documented submission on the state’s achievements in tourism over the last six years in infrastructure development, commissioning of tourism projects, new tourism products and services, initiatives in safety and security, cleanliness and hygiene, policies, marketing and promotions, events and activities.

Tourism minister Ajgaonkar said, “It is truly an honour for Goa to receive such a prestigious award for the second year, especially for Comprehensive Development of Tourism. A lot is being undertaken in the state towards overall development of tourism. This is helping the state attract more tourists as we have grown not only in numbers, but also in terms of infrastructure, initiatives, safety for tourists and cleanliness.”

He congratulated the Goa Tourism officials who have worked on the plans, policies and projects, and thanked all tourism stakeholders, as well as ministers and government officials who supported and co-operated with the ministry.
