Viva Goa unravels the complexities of constructing the new Mandovi bridge – Atal Setu

Last month, India’s third longest cable-stay bridge slung over the River Mandovi opened to public use. Atal Setu – named after late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has received both criticism & praise during its construction. But despite differing opinions, the result is the successful completion of a technically challenging mega project that will aim to improve Goa's connectivity & ease Panaji’s traffic woes.

Sandip Chodnekar began his career with the old Mandovi bridges. The general manager (Civil) at the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) joined the team working on the third Mandovi bridge. He speaks to VIVA GOA about the challenges faced during the construction of the project and decodes the technical aspects of the bridge, thus giving us a glimpse of the smaller frames of the big picture.
