‘I have a lot of faith in RTI’

Goa State Chief Information Commissioner LEENA MEHENDALE believes the power of the Right To Information (RTI) is a force for positive change and improvements in India. She shares interesting anecdotes about her time in the IAS, why she believes so strongly in the RTI and what she loves about Goa

An officer of the 1974 batch of the eilte Indian Administrative Services (IAS) of the Maharashtra Cadre, Leena Mehendale served as Additional Chief Secretary and a member of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) before she took over her latest position in Goa.

When she was appointed as the Goa State Chief Information Commissioner in October last year, she filled in a post that had being lying vacant for nearly 15 months. Despite the shortage of staff, she vowed to reduce the pendency of cases. Mehendale hopes to increase the scope of the commission from just clearing cases to outreach and awareness programmes, and the continuing shortage of staff has not dampened her spirits.

She is also looking forward to using media like newspapers, radio and television to educate the public. She has to her credit numerous books, radio and TV shows which are educational in nature and continues to contribute articles in Marathi and Hindi.
