Goa bags Best Overall Small State at India Today ‘State of the States Conclave 2014’

Goa won top honours at the recent India Today ‘State of the States Conclave 2014’ held at Hotel Shangri-La in Delhi. The state also bagged four other prestigeous awards in the small states category, namely, Macro Economy, Investment, Education, and Consumer Market. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar received the trophies from Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The conclave started with an address by the India Today Group editorial adviser Shekhar Gupta, who underlined the growing importance of states in national politics, saying, “BJP’s success in the General Elections 2014 is largely because of the party reaching out to states. It picked up strong leaders there, and went on to win states that account for the maximum seats in Parliament. This has led to the Chief Minister’s Office being all powerful, a trend that was last seen in the 50s and early 60s.”

Union Minister for Communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad added that the politics of identity has matured into the politics of good governance.

“The job of the chief minister is to create hope. Involving the states in decision-making is the only way to ensure development and good governance in the country. Co-operative federalism is evolving in India where Centre and states work in tandem,” the Union minister said.
