Central Excise Day celebrated in Panaji

The Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerate, Goa celebrated Central Excise Day at the Goa State Museum in Panaji.

The theme for this year is ‘The year of Tax Payer Service’. Chief Secretary Kewal Kumar Sharma, who was the Chief Guest, said, “The revenue from Central Excise can be important for small states. The natural buoyancy in central collections can contribute to a substantial amount of money for state spending, which is useful for development projects.”

Commissioner of Appeals P K Sharma said that the trade and the department were hopeful about Goods and Service Tax (GST). He said that it was a tough job as it is not easy to draft for both the centre and the state. He also listed ways in which officers could be more effective. 

Co-chairman of the National Council for Small and Medium Enterprises, (ASSOCHAM), Manguirish Pai Raiker said, “Trade and central excise needs to work hand-in-hand. To date, we have been under the old tax rules, but the proposed GST will open new doors. The money collected by the department goes into social causes. Officers of Central Excise should take pride in the fact that you are contributing to the development of the state and the economy.”

Officers were also felicitated during the celebrations. Commissioner of Customs A Anpazhakan gave the welcome address while Joint Commissioner G B Santimano proposed the vote of thanks.
