Dempo College Jubilee Year inaugurated

Governor Mridula Sinha acknowledged the vision of the founders of S S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics to open an institute dedicated to commerce and economics at a time when the science stream was in demand.

During her keynote address at the launch of the golden jubilee year 2015-16, she said, “Their decision proved right as today people have understood the importance of commerce and economics.” The institute is the first commerce and economics college in the state. The ceremony was attended by the Leader of the Opposition Pratapsingh Rane, Vice Chancellor of Goa University Dr Satish Shetye, Postmaster General of Goa region P Ranjit Kumar, and Director of Higher Education Bhaskar Naik.

The Governor said that a number of educational institutions in the country have shut down after the death of their founders. “However, it is to the credit of the Dempo family that they have kept the flag of this institution flying high,” she observed. Rane added that only good higher education can ensure India’s growth similar to countries like Singapore and South Korea.

Shetye said that more students are graduating in commerce than in any other faculty. He also added that nearly a third of the state’s students strive for higher education, opining that today’s world offers unprecedented opportunities if we provide right avenues to the new generation.

Chairman of the Dempo Charities Trust Shrinivas Dempo said that the S S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics was the dream of his forefathers, Vasantrao Dempo and Voicuntrao Dempo, to enrich countless minds. “The college rose to the problems, challenges and opportunities, during past 50 years,” he said, confirming that the institution will soon be moving to a state-of-the-art campus at Cujira in north Goa.

The Governor also released a golden jubilee logo of the college as well as a commemorative postal cover on the occasion. Members of the Dempo Charities Trust including Vishwasrao Dempo and Pallavi Dempo, administrator Sunil Prabhudesai, college principal Radhika Naik and members of the Dempo family led by Neeladevi Dempo, besides teachers, students and past students of the institution also attended the function.
