AirAsia Berhad (Malaysia) CEO Aireen Omar discusses why world’s most famous budget airline recently launched direct flights from Goa to Malaysia

In just a year after it spread its wings in India, AirAsia has snatched one per cent of the market share with double-digit annual growth in passenger numbers. Now the Malaysian low-cost airline has decided to connect Goa with Kuala Lumpur through three direct flights a week.

At the helm of this decision is AirAsia Berhad CEO Aireen Omar. Hailing from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, Omar made full use of her degrees from London School of Economics & Political Science and New York University to pursue a successful career in London and New York, before returning home.

She joined AirAsia as the Director of Corporate Finance and her portfolio expanded quickly to also include Treasury, Fuel Procurement, Investor Relations Functions. In 2012, she took over the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from the airline’s dynamic founder Tony Fernandes. She is the recipient of the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award for the CEO category at the inaugural Malaysian Women of Excellence 2014 Awards and the ‘Masterclass Woman CEO of the Year’ Award at the inaugural Selangor Excellence Business Award 2014. Omar continues to push the envelope of the region’s aviation industry with her determination, as she keeps AirAsia focused on its mantra “Now Everyone Can Fly”.
