R K Srivastava has been serving Goa for many years, first as principal secretary, then as chief secretary, and now as Goa’s state election commissioner. His work has left an indelible mark on the lives of young officers

R K Srivastava’s journey to Goa started as a principal secretary following which he was posted here as chief secretary for nearly two years. In this position, he handled multiple roles in the government which was so impressed it gave him an extension twice for three months each, possibly a first in the state.

R K Srivastava was recently appointed as the state election commissioner of Goa. His role now includes supervising, controlling and superintending the holding of elections to local bodies such as panchayats, municipalities, zilla panchayat and the municipal corporation of the city of Panaji.

VIVA GOA speaks to RK Srivastava about his multiple responsibilities and life in Goa.

Tell us about your journey in Goa so far
Life takes you towards your destination through different routes, passing through different places, encountering different situations, dealing with different people and accumulating a different set of experiences that are generally a mix of both the good and bad.

When I came to Goa as principal secretary in 2014, I had hardly met anyone except then chief minister Manohar Parrikar and the chief secretary when I had to supervise and monitor a relief and rescue operation after Ruby Residency – a tall residential complex under construction in Canacona – collapsed like a cake killing many people.
