King of Rackets

Indian Navy Commodore Ashutosh Pednekar's passion for racket sports and perseverance has led him to become the first Indian to participate in and win international tournaments in racketlon

The Rio Olympic fever is all set to hit India, as the country’s top athletes aim to perform their best this August. With the focus on well-known sports, this young champion prospered in one that has gone unsung and unnoticed.

Navy officer Commodore Ashutosh Pednekar from Panaji has become the first Indian to win an international title in racketlon. Pednekar made sports history when he became the first Indian to participate in and win international tournaments in the sport that combines table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis in sequence.

Currently posted in New Delhi, Pednekar has been a badminton player since school. He participated at the state level in all age categories from sub junior to senior level from 1982 to 1994. “Badminton is something I picked up during school in Panaji, However I could never be national champion in the game due to several reasons including the lack of competition in Goa at that time. Thus there was always a sense of unfulfilled dreams of achieving something for the state and the country,” he said.
