Sometimes a Career Begins at 40…

And seven other life lessons I learned from my mother Goa governor Dr Mridula Sinha

It’s one of those mornings when I cannot stop thinking about existential questions. ‘What I am doing with my life?’ ‘Where am I headed?’ I should really be making use of the beautiful sunny weather and going out for a walk. You can’t take good sunshine for granted here in Seattle. But I cannot get myself to do it. I just want to sit and mope for a bit.

A bad cold suddenly attacked me this morning and that’s part of the reason why I am feeling so blah – mentally, physically, spiritually. In moments like these, I often think of my mother and it makes me feel a little better. Like a cup of good coffee.

There are many ways in which she inspires me. But I didn’t always feel this way. I didn’t have the time to notice, the time to think, or the wisdom to appreciate. It is only recently that I have begun looking up to her as my inspiration – now that I am a mother, now that I am unemployed, now that I am scarily close to 40, and especially in moments like these when I am sick and cannot stop worrying about my future.
