The Determined Doctor

President of Indian Medical Association, Goa Dr Medha Shekhar Salkar hopes to make sweeping changes in organ donation and sex determination in the state

She was one of the first volunteers from the Indian Medical Association Goa to donate her organs and hopes to reverse the country’s strict laws on sex determination. Dr Medha Shekhar Salkar has strong views on certain issues that may shake up the general consensus, but she is eagerly looking forward to change.
Her commitment to become a doctor began early, when she watched her parents’ dependence on their family physician for any type of illness. Dr Medha Salkar worked towards her goal at Goa Medical College (GMC) and became an anesthetist through Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
Currently, her role as a doctor at the Directorate of Health Services and president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Goa helps her to translate real-time medical needs into advice for concrete health policies. The IMA Goa observes all national days associated with health and medicine with awareness programmes. The group has held workshops to sensitise the population on sex determination, promotion of breast feeding and organ donation.
Dr Medha Salkar’s most recent achievement is the formation of a brain death declaration committee in April, which will help the IMA Goa promote the spread of altruistic organ donation so more lives can
be saved.
