National Fire Services Day observed

The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services recently conducted an awareness programme on National Fire Services Day. Chief secretary Parimal Rai said, “Fire in a close environment is more harmful than smoke. We need to ensure how to use this fire. Hence, awareness is an important tool. We encourage more informed citizens and also avoid carelessness which is the biggest cause of fire. We have to teach everybody how to be safe.”

National Fire Services Day was followed by Fire Prevention Week with the theme is ‘Fire prevention is better than fire fighting.’

Director of Fire and Emergency Services Ashok Menon pointed out, “As many as 133 school teachers have been educated in fire safety in 2019. A total of 4022 secondary school teachers have been trained since 2010. We have initiated an awareness programme in disaster preparedness and fire safety for villagers, in which 106 panchayats have participated. The department acquired a mobile fire safety educational van in May 2018 which has travelled to educational institutions, village panchayats, public places and government departments.

“Apart from the routine, the department has trained 450 sponsored candidates in various aspects of basic fire safety,” Menon said.
