As Goa’s No.1 Marathi newspaper Tarun Bharat celebrates its centenary this year, VIVA GOA speaks to Editor-in-chief & chairman of Lokmanya Multipurpose Cooperative Society - KIRAN THAKUR about their historic journey

In 1919 Belgaum, Baburaoji Thakur started what progressed to be today’s No. 1 Marathi newspaper in Goa: Tarun Bharat. The son took the father’s legacy and built it into a brand that is well known and has a strong hold among the Marathi-speaking populace.

Even when the wave of digital media was drowning out other print scions in the market, Kiran Thakur managed to swiftly sail through it all by introducing the Tarun Bharat website in 1999, making it the first Marathi newspaper to achieve the feat.

His love for change and expansion was such that today the newspaper has nine editions, including one in Mumbai. Tarun Bharat completes 100 years this year and this milestone was achieved because of the passion and dedication towards his father’s goal.
