National banking scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana launched in Goa

The launch of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) at a grand function in New Delhi was followed by a state level launch in Goa organised by the State Level Bankers Committee, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture (Independent Charge) Shripad Naik.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar launched the scheme in the state. Finance Secretary P Krishnamurthy, Joint Secretary Meenakshi Gad, Deputy Managing Director of SBI  S K Mishra, Chief General Manager of SBI Sudhir Dubey, General Manager of SBI Hardayal Prasad and officials from all banks and insurance companies in Goa, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and BSNL were also present. 

Parrikar lauded the banks in Goa for working towards the goal of 100 per cent financial inclusion in Goa. He said that it was unacceptable that 41 per cent of households in the country were unbanked. He narrated several welfare schemes of the state government where beneficiaries were receiving funds in their bank accounts and said that these measures had contributed to financial inclusion in the state. Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik also appreciated the work of all banks and emphasised the need to provide affordable banking services including credit to excluded sections of the society. He mentioned the PM Narendra Modi had taken this initiative where over one crore accounts will be opened in one day.

Deputy MD of SBI S K Mishra said that economic progress without financial inclusion was not possible in Goa. Parrikar distributed passbooks to 10 beneficiaries whose accounts had been opened under the PMJDY. Chief General Manager of SBI Mumbai Sudhir Dubey proposed the vote of thanks.
