SAVIO DE NORONHA, Programme Executive, All India Radio (Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting), radio jockey for FM Rainbow and anchor for Doordarshan Sports, recalls his experiences at the recent Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland

Let me begin by saying that it was a great honour to represent India’s national broadcaster Prasar Bharati at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year. It was memorable because the Commonwealth Games is the third largest multi-sport event, after the Olympics and the Asian Games.

It involves 71 countries, with visitors and spectators from across the Commonwealth nations, automatically bringing in a large Indian diaspora. You meet Indians, see India playing and support Indian players.

Professionally too, it was an invaluable experience when I did my first international commentary at Hampden Park, a place where legends are born and memories are made. I covered the opening ceremony with Hindi commentator Jainendra Singh, and our commentary was broadcast all over India.
The three-and-a-half hour opening ceremony made it a challenge to convey the visual spectacle that was unfolding before my eyes to a radio audience so they could understand the scale of events.

During the event, we covered all the games, from badminton to table tennis, but I focused more on athletics. Over the years, I had read so much, not only about the sport and the people involved, but also about stadiums and places like Hampden Park. The atmosphere was mind-blowing and full of energy and enthusiasm, colour, cheer, and people of different nationalities. With multiple events taking place at one time, a single glance over the stadium would simultaneously give you updates about a 400m run, javelin throw, shot put, and discus throw.
