‘People don’t care how secure their phones are’

As a professor of mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, ALFRED MENEZES from Miramar specialises in cryptography, involving methods for securing communications, not just on the internet but on mobile phones as well

Cryptography is widely used by governments and the military to protect their data and communications from foreign adversaries. But this field also finds uses in regular life, from something as simple as authenticating a website or an online transaction, to sending emails or registering your mobile phone on a network.

Alfred Menezes’ research involves designing and analysing methods for secure communications. The cryptographic systems he has designed have been used by companies around the world including BlackBerry. At the University of Waterloo, Canada, he is the co-founder of the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research, which is one of the world’s largest research centres for cryptography.

He has also written several popular books on cryptography including Handbook of Applied Cryptography and the Guide to Elliptic Curve Cryptography. He also regularly offers consulting services to companies, and helps them analyse their cryptographic designs.
