Mittu Chandilya, MD & CEO of AirAsia India, discusses the airline’s connect to Goa and his journey as a leader in the world’s most famous budget airline

In March 2013, AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Tony Fernandes tweeted that a CEO had been identified for the airline’s India operation. He pointed out quite mysteriously, “A very smart boy from the South, Madras. An amazing CV... will impress all,” without revealing his identity.

The find was Mittu Chandilya, a family man with an enriching career, one filled with several milestones at a very young age. Fernandes placed his bets on Chandilya to lead the company’s India operations.

Since joining AirAsia India, Chandilya has quickly stepped out of the Group CEO’s shadow and built an image of his own.

VIVA GOA has a chat with the young aviation managing director…

AirAsia co-owner and Group CEO Tony Fernandes traces his roots to Goa. Was this an emotional connect that your first commercial flight in India had Goa as a destination?

Definitely that is one of the reasons why we started out of Goa. Goa is a destination that is very close to Tony’s heart. But above that, Goa itself is an amazing place to visit. The AirAsia Group is proud to be the only airline that connects Kuala Lumpur directly to Goa.
