8 superfoods you should include in your diet

In recent years, there has been great demand for certain foods believed to possess high nutritional value and exceptional health benefits.

Quinoa, chia seeds, olive oil, goji berries, acai berries and kale are some of the foods being touted as ‘superfoods’. Most of these are imported and therefore expensive.

India, on the other hand, has been the home to many foods that are cheaper and more nutritious. Here

are eight:

RAGI: Also known as nachni, it is a millet used in the form of flour. Ragi flour is a fine reddish brown powder with tiny visible red specks that has a bland flavour and

nutty aroma.

It is rich in carbohydrate from starch and dietary fibre. Ragi is digested slowly and keeps one full for longer, thereby helping to control food intake and preventing spikes in blood sugar levels. Fibre also helps lower levels of triglycerides, VLDL and LDL cholesterol.

Ragi is a good source of protein and B-complex vitamins and has a high content of calcium which helps strengthen the bones, reduce the risk of fractures and stem development of osteoporosis. It is also rich in beneficial antioxidant polyphenols.

Ragi does not contain gluten and is ideal for those on gluten-free diets. Consumption of ragi is believed to help relax the body and aid in wound healing. Fermented ragi products are rich in probiotics which help keep the digestive system healthy.
