Philanthropist Vimala Britto opens up about bringing world renowned football players to Goa through her latest initiative – Premier Futsal

t’s a ball and a goal once more, a winning combination for Goa. Not quite the scale of football but just as thrilling, futsal comes away as a more approachable way to get children into sports. Philanthropist Vimala Britto and her business magnate husband Xavier Britto pooled resources and ideas with other Indian entrepreneurs to launch the multi-national Premier Futsal  league in the country.

The first season was held from July 15-24 in Chennai and Goa, and despite being just a five-a-side team tournament, saw some of the world’s biggest names participate. There was Ronaldinho, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cafu, Hernan Crespo, Michel Salgado and Falcao – known as the Pele of futsal.

Vimala Britto, like her husband, wears many hats. She is the co-founder of St Britto’s Group of Schools, director of Indev Logistics, managing director of Esthell Continental Hotel and Resorts, and director of Uniworld Logistics Pvt Ltd. Her experience in educational counselling and administration has given her a deep understanding of the kind of initiative it takes to get more children involved in sports, a need of the hour.
So far, teams based in Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai participated in the debut Premier Futsal league, with Mumbai 5s defeating Kochi 5s 3-2 in the final on penalties by sudden death. Most of the matches saw stadiums drawing above 90 per cent occupancy. It’s been an exciting season and the happiness of success is evident on Vimala Britto’s face.
