It is an honour for Goa to be chosen as one of the host cities for this once-in-a-lifetime event, the FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held from October 6 to 28. This event is undoubtedly the biggest international sports event to be held in the state, despite India’s low ranking in football worldwide. VIVA GOA asks a few of football enthusiasts about their opinions on India as event host.

What are your views on FIFA hosting its Under-17 World Cup in India despite our low ranking in world football?
I am happy to promote and endorse any event in Goa as long as it benefits the state, the Goan people and does not damage the environment. By environment I mean at all levels from sound disturbance to turtle nesting. As responsible citizens, we must choose carefully the celebration of Goa as a Golden State and the destruction of Goa as a Disgraced State.

What are your views on FIFA hosting its Under-17 World Cup in India despite our low ranking in world football?
India is a sleeping giant in football. This Under-17 World Cup will go a long way in waking up the football passion and talent among Indians. Though India is a cricket country, the football following in our nation is tremendous. Add to it the fact that India has the largest young population and a high number of them also play the game even on sub-standard fields. The FIFA Under-17 World Cup will be a big win-win situation for the game in India. Kudos to FIFA’s great vision!
