A guide to deepen your understanding of meditation and how to practice it

Someone once asked Lord Buddha skeptically, “What have you gained through meditation?”
The Buddha replied, “Nothing at all.”
– “Then, Blessed One, what good is it?”
–    “It is not what I have gained that is important, but rather what I have diminished, namely, anger, greed, hatred, and delusion.”

It is both easy and difficult to explain what meditation is, and the same can be said while explaining the benefits of meditation. Meditation is simply finding that quiet spot in your mind, that spot where no thoughts intrude. Anything that can take us to that place is meditation.

It is not about a physical quiet space, but a mental one and any activity or non-activity can be a meditation. People who run say that it is their meditation and so it is. There is something hypnotic about the rhythm of running, and when you run, no thoughts intrude. The same is with dancing or singing where you become part of the song itself. But for the rest of us, there are easier ways to meditate and the ways are so varied that everyone can do it.
