IFFI @ 50!
As the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) celebrates its golden jubilee and its 15th edition in Goa, VIVA GOA takes a look at what’s in store with exclusive interviews and a throwback to its debut in the state
The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is one of Asia’s first international movie festivals. Its journey began way back in 1952 with the inaugural edition organised by the central government’s Film Division in Bombay (now Mumbai). There were 23 participating countries at the time with more than 200 film entries. The festival aimed to create a platform for cinema across the world and serve as a means to promote the art of filmmaking.
In the following years, IFFI travelled to various cities including Madras (now Chennai), Delhi, Kolkata, etc. In its third edition, a separate competition category was introduced by the festival committee in which Sri Lankan film ‘Gamperaliya’ won the first coveted Golden Peacock Award.
