VIVA GOA celebrates Women’s Day by asking men about the qualities of their eminent wives that make them superstars

It’s the 21st century but women are still fighting for equal rights everywhere, even in developed countries. Words fly quick and fiery, particularly over social media, as battles span issues as minute as the definition of feminism to as ubiquitous as equal pay, trying to wrest women from horrific practices such female genital mutilation to power struggles in the top echelons of the corporate world.

India is a boiling pot as far as women are concerned, spanning the range of repression and independence in homes and society. In Goa, we are proud to be one of the more progressive states in women’s rights but still have a long, long way to go. The key turning point in women’s equality begins at home – where parents raise children without creating divides, couples work together to change the dynamics within their own relationships and youth learn to respect every gender.

In celebration of Women’s Day, we ask one half of several prominent couples to cast a light-hearted look at the other and rediscover their companions. For which man does not want his better half to break into a smile? After all, she deserves it, along with a huge amount of respect. She juggles many roles every day – homemaker, professional, counsellor, mother and friend.

For our main power persona, five-time World Women’s Amateur Boxing champ and Olympics medallist Mary Kom stood out as fighter who has braved challenges similar to those of thousands of young Indian women.
We hope her story, and the shining support of her husband Karung Onkholer, prove an inspiration for families in Goa to step up and fight for women, starting in their homes and neighbourhoods.
