A tribute to India’s additional solicitor general Atmaram Nadkarni who completes 10 years as a senior advocate

At a particular stage in one’s life, each grateful recipient of knowledge has within them a yearning to honour the person who has played a definitive role in their own progress – professional, personal and sometimes even spiritual.

When earlier this year, my senior at the Bar, Atmaram Nadkarni completed 10 momentous years as a senior advocate, I too had a deep yearning to honour this great soul in some manner. I knew it was not going to be easy. I knew him well enough to be aware that he is someone who cares more about the intention behind an action and the effort behind a gesture, rather than any material object or accolade.

This made my attempt to honour him even more – for what could I possibly do for a person who so selflessly gives to others? It was then that I remembered that a student’s greatest gift to his teacher is to share his values and teachings with others, so that they too may benefit from those lessons.

Since everyone is well aware of his success and professional competence, I am sharing some personal anecdotes that reveal a side which not too many people have seen.
