Managing Director of Suburban Diagnostics Dr Sanjay Arora unravels the process behind COVID-19 testing

With over 150 diagnostic centres extending services in the last 25 years, Suburban Diagnostics is a state-of-the-art diagnostic and pathology lab for blood tests in the country. Its place in the industry is built on high standards and precise testing.

Offering more than 1000 testing facilities equipped with the latest technology and methods, it is also one of the leading testing facilities for COVID-19 in India.  

Long extra hours of work, added responsibilities, risk to one’s own life and that of others did not hold back the team of medical personnel at Suburban Diagnostics to help the country fight the pandemic.

It was started in 1994 by managing director Dr Sanjay Arora, MD, a pathologist and alumnus of Grant Medical College, Mumbai, with specialisation in cytopathology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins and Henry Ford Hospital, USA, Suburban. Initially providing basic pathology services, today, it has one of the largest service networks of 140+ centers across Maharashtra including Mumbai and Pune. Suburban has taken its brand value to a whole different level.

VIVA GOA talks to managing director Dr Sanjay Arora about testing for COVID-19, his expansion plans for Goa and much more. Excerpts:

Suburban Diagnostics has been one of the leading players in the diagnostics services for the last 25 years. How do you manage to keep up with the various technological advancements in the industry?

From the beginning we have insisted on using the best instruments and technologies available to deliver value to our customers. To achieve this, we have relationships with technology leaders in the industry, including Roche GMBL, Horiba, Abbott, Siemens, etc. As an organisation, we encourage our employees to keep themselves updated with the latest developments in the field. We also create forums for discussions, like internal CMEs and WhatsApp groups, for free exchange of ideas.

What was the recent upgrade undertaken at Suburban Diagnostics?

In response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we have upgraded our molecular testing capabilities. We have now extensively automated every step of the molecular testing process. This ensures better throughput and consistency of results. When we started RT-PCR testing for COVID-19 in March, we were able to do around 300 tests per day at our Mumbai molecular diagnostics lab. Today, we can process upwards of 3000 samples 

24 hours a day, every day at the same lab. We have also started a fully accredited molecular diagnostics centre in Pune to meet the need for increased testing in the city and surrounding regions.

In the middle of this crisis and especially during the lockdown, many of our employees at every level also upgraded themselves. They have stepped up and taken on new roles, learned new skills and stood at the frontlines to fight this pandemic.
