Gold and silver medalist in Chess

Ethan Vaz has won many laurels. He has been on a winning spree this year, with many achievements to his credit. It began with a silver medal at the under-10 National Chess Championship 2021 and moved to an award at the under-12 National Chess Championship 2021, and a team gold medal at the Asian Schools Chess Championship 2021. At the World Cup 2021 finals, he won a silver and recently bagged a double gold at the western Asia Youth Online Chess Championship 2021 (Under-10) in the individual and team categories. 

Vaz has held the Arena International Master (AIM) title at just eight years, rated by the International Chess federation (FIDE) in all three formats at 1384 in standard, 1284 in rapid and 1263 in blitz format. He has been participating in state, country, continent and world championships since 2018 and won at many events. 

The 10-year-old chess master lives in Raia and studies in class five at Kings School in Sao Jose de Areal, Salcete. VIVA GOA speaks to Ethan after his splendid performance at the Online Chess Championship. 


Developing an interest in chess… 

Began when I was six years old when my parents purchased a chess set. My older brother Edrick and I played as amateurs, and then were determined to win against our parents. Seeing our enthusiasm, they arranged for formal coaching. I began by participating in the Under-7 National Chess Championships 2018 in Karnataka, and made it to the prize list in the open category contested by 214 players from India. This paved the way for many achievements.
