Singing Sensation

Totally unfiltered, relentlessly productive, and obsessed-about by millions, it was a soul that was born to sing. Goa’s beloved nightingale, India’s Shirley Bassey, Lorna Cordeiro is living life a mile-a-minute

In a sparsely furnished apartment in Mumbai, lives a music legend – Konkani singer Lorna Cordeiro, now in her 60s. Born Lorna Lui Cordeiro in the thick of the Goan monsoons in August 1946, the third child of Cecelia and Teofilo Cordeiro was destined for fame.

From their ancestral home in Tabravaddo, Saligao, the family, with six little ones, moved to Mumbai, regaling the neighbourhood with their Konkani songs each evening. Lorna is no stranger to fame today, but it was Goa’s jazz legend Chris Perry who helped her get there since the age of 15 when she sang for his band. Fans have flocked to hear her as a jazz singer during her upcoming years in clubs in Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai and Bangalore.

Her most popular tracks include Pisso, Bebdo, Red Rose, Tuzo Mog and Noxibak Rodta, which are still played on the radio and at festivals and events today. Lorna took a sabbatical for 25 years before returning to the stage. Crowd-funded film Nachom-ia Kumpasar, released in December last year, chronicles her life and that of her ‘guru’ Chris Perry.
