An accidental teenage pregnancy is filled with enormous stress and challenges. Here’s how to prevent the nightmare
Until just a couple of decades ago, contraception was quite contrary to its inception during the teenage years. The permissible age for marriage was late teens or early 20s. As such the idea of contraception was ill conceived then.
Obviously, unwanted teenage pregnancies were not uncommon, and were a huge scandal, with markedly elevated stress to the pregnant woman, her mother, sisters and female friends, to the father if he was told, and to the boyfriend if he was told and ‘cared’.
The result was approaching ‘quacks’ to induce abortion, using crude herbal medicines and abortion sticks that were introduced into the vagina.
Septic abortion, bleeding and shock were one of the highest causes of teenage mortality until as late as the 1990s.
