A Goan Sun in London

Art academician and art historian, Jonathan Benjamin traces the elusive mystic Udayraj Gadnis after his grand show at the National Gallery, London and in the British parliament to mark 70 years of Indian Independence

Udayraj Gadnis is the only Goan-Indian artist to date to have shown paintings at The Masterpices, The Frieze Masters and The National Gallery in London, all in 2016.

For all of the hype and razzmatazz that has surrounded him throughout his career, Gadnis is extremely private. His private life may seem to have been played out in the full glare of the spotlight, but he invariably declined interview requests and rarely let anyone outside his tight inner circle get too far past his public persona. He agreed for one in a Jazz Club in London. Ironical as it may seem, Gadnis loves jazz.

The only place he really reveals himself is in his paintings. He is an astonishingly sensitive and intuitive artist who only paints from his heart, giving the colours on canvas just the right emphasis and weight, almost autobiographical. To say there was nobody before him is not an exaggeration! He laughs at just what I have said to him. One can instantly know he is warm, affectionate and gentle, even in a jazz club.
