Neuro-Spinal Wizard
Dr Premanand Shantaram Ramani, India's celebrated neuro-spinal surgeon, has a varied and rather impressive resume. An inquisitive, keen individual, this illustrious son of the soil loves to impart his knowledge of the spine and its common ailments to the masses in a language which they can understand
Of all the things we take for granted, the spine is probably one of the least looked after. From slouching over the desk at school to contorting into strange positions to watch the telly, we often put our spines at stress. India's celebrated neuro-spinal surgeon Dr Premanand S Ramani has decades of experience treating a range of problems associated with the brain, spine and spinal cord.
With a passion for studying, he moved to Mumbai to do his bachelor's and master's degrees, then to England and the US for specialisations.
Dr Ramani is the first Asian recipient of the Paul Bucy Award for the best teacher from the University of Chicago, has appeared on a postage stamp in Hungary, and has an operation theatre block named after him in Indonesia. Currently a senior consultant to Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, he is also the brain behind Ahilyabai Ramani Pratishtan, a foundation that promotes education, health and sports in the state, of which the popular Goa Marathon is a highlight.
Dr Ramani explains the intricacies of his field and what he thinks of its future.
