Art that speaks louder than words
Goa’s famous Padma Shri awardee Laxman Pai was recently conferred the Gomant Vibhushan, state’s highest honour. Pai has travelled beyond borders to win national and international fame
Laxman Pai, celebrated contemporary artist, academician, mentor to students at the Goa College of Art and distinguished son of the soil was recently conferred with the state’s highest award – the Gomant Vibhushan by the government of Goa for his outstanding contribution to the field of visual art. Pai dedicated his entire life to the love of art. When he discovered the colourful innate in him, there was no turning back. His art travelled and was appreciated by people far and beyond the borders of the nation. Pai’s masterpieces are different in its own way; all of his art reflects his impression and expressions that leave a mark on his mind, whether good or evil, leaving no space for commentary.
Pai is a painter who uses bright colours in his paintings, as according to him bold colours set narrative into a pitch of intensity. His painting are on display at the Ben and Abby Grey Foundation, New York Public Library, Berlin Museum, Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Madras Museum, Nagpur Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, Punjab University Museum and more.
Viva Goa had a chat with him after the award ceremony where he spoke about his early days in Goa before crossing shores to explore and expand his art to his return to receive this commendation.
