Rahul Prabhudesai
First Goan mountaineer to attempt Mount Everest
Goa’s youngest ardent mountaineer and nature lover Rahul Prabhudesai developed a love for hills and heights as a child. It was the freedom hidden in these terrains that attracted him to scale great heights.
Prabhudesai is gearing up for his next big challenge and every mountaineer’s dream – Mount Everest. The 24-year-old speaks to VIVA GOA about his preparations for scaling the world’s loftiest peak.
My inspirations...
Were trekking, a love for nature and the outdoors since my childhood. As a child, I was a state-level swimmer and a soccer player, but the energy and endless freedom of the hills was something that attracted me to the mountains after my first trek with my parents in 2010 to Roopkund, Uttarakhand.
My parents were more than supportive of me taking to this sport despite its risks.
My Mt Everest project...
has been a relatively new goal I set for myself and Goa – I hope to be the first Goan to climb Everest in 2018.
It has been a four-year project and as a part of my preparation, I have been to more than six expeditions over 6,000m with the last major one being Dhaulagiri 7, at 23,805 feet in western Nepal.
For Everest, I am raising awareness for mental health by potentially working with Goan mental health awareness NGO Sangath.
