The Força Goa Foundation recently bagged an award from Fairtrade India for being the first organisation in India to make a commitment to Fairtrade footballs.

The victory in the first home game of this season’s Indian Super League (ISL) against Mumbai City FC was also a kick-start to the Fairtrade football revolution in India. Fairtrade is a global movement that aims to give consumers the power to make informed choices that change lives. Choosing a Fairtrade India-certified product means the farmers and workers who grow and make the food, fashion or footballs are treated fairly.

The Força Goa Foundation aims to bring Goa together through football and is transforming Goa, one football field at a time. Through football, the foundation aims to mobilise, empower and connect communities across the state. It trains many children across the fields in Goa about football.

The foundation has committed to sourcing all the footballs to be used at their academy, coaching or training from a Fairtrade certified factory. Through these choices, the foundation will be empowering a community of workers who hand stitch INDPro footballs in a certified factory

in Ludhiana.

By choosing the fairer football alternative, Força Goa Foundation is ensuring that the footballs are made at factories that follow Fairtrade social and environmental sustainability standards. This means that the workers who stitch them have access to good working conditions, fair wages, right to form associations and unions and a Fairtrade Premium.

Fans of the foundation can also show their support to the movement. The footballs will be sold during  team matches in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa and online through the Força Goa website.

Coaches from the Força Goa Foundation attended a Fairtrade workshop at the FC Goa House to learn how their footballs were made. Across the next month, the 16 coaches who attended the workshop will be taking this awareness to more than 1500 children.
