Three days at the theatre
The Sadir Theatre Festival returns for the fourth time with three unique plays. Artistic director SWATI BHISE talks to Viva Goa about the highlights of the event
The annual Sadir Theatre Festival returns for the fourth year with some out-of-the-box plays at Kala Academy, Panaji. The festival opens on February 27 with an English play, C sharp C Blunt, followed by the Marathi play Uney Purey Shahar Ek by Girish Karnad on February 28 and closes with the Hinglish play Piya Behrupiya based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on March 1.
Artistic director Swati Bhise feels that each of these plays are a treat for the Goa audience as they will see some of the best theatre from all over the world right at their doorstep.
How did you select the three plays that are a part of this festival?
Each play is totally unique and I had the privilege of being able to select the best ones as I was on the jury of the Mahendra Theatre Festival alongside an astounding group of panelists including Utkarsh Mazumdar, Shabana Azmi, and Kulbhushan Kharbandha. Two of the three acts we are featuring this year at the festival were selected by us as the best plays. The stories are extremely thought-provoking, cutting-edge and humorous. I don’t think I had to wonder about adjusting the story of the play vis-à-vis the Goan audience.
