The tourism department’s popular GOA HERITAGE FESTIVAL proved to be a big hit with the audience in this year’s bigger avatar

At a time when technology threatens to destroy tradition, a festival celebrating heritage seems like an ideal way to get people to connect with their roots. In Goa of course, a festival of this scale will also attract tourists in the state out of curiosity. With Saligao as its venue, the festival seemed ideally located for Goans looking to learn more about their tradition as well as tourists who want to explore a different aspect of their favourite holiday destination.

The five-day festival organised by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza by pressing the button to light the ‘Divaj’, Goa’s traditional lamp associated with festive celebrations in temples. Tourism Minister & Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar, MLA & GTDC Chairman Nilesh Cabral, President of Travel & Tourism Association of Goa Francisco Braganza, State Level Marketing & Promotion Committee for Goa Tourism members Ralph D’Souza, Mark Mendes and Sanjeev Mendes, and the Sarpanch of Saligao Eknath Oraskar were also present at the inauguration.

Francis D’souza said, “Heritage is very important, whether it is Goan or Indian. Through this festival, we hope to spread the knowledge of our heritage to as many people as possible so they  can appreciate our rich heritage.”

Dilip Parulekar said that he was proud and happy to host the heritage festival in Saligao. “Thanks to the overwhelming response to last year’s Goa Heritage Festival and the support of the people, we have organised another one this year. We hope are happy to have your support this year as well,” he added. He was also hopeful that the international and domestic tourists who were in the state would learn more about Goa’s heritage by visiting this festival.
