Governor Dr Mridula Sinha speaks to her daughter about living in a joint family after marriage

My loving daughter Mili,

May you live long.

I attended two of your friends' weddings last year. Shivani lives in a joint family with her parents-in-law, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and their wives, and five children. Her mother was very worried before her wedding and said, “What do I do? The boy is very nice, but Shivani would have to live in a joint family with 15 people. I am not sure she would be able to adjust in a large family.”

I reminded her, “You too have a big family – you are 10, and three generations in the family, you

have your mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. Shivani was close to her grandmother and sister-in-law. Being the only girl child, she had her tantrums. Does she have any problem with this family?”

It was as if she had forgotten about her joint family. For parents, a daughter is like a child before her marriage, as if she was born yesterday. Even when raising her, her parents keep in mind that she has to go to another house someday. Even with regard to household chores, not much is expected from her. If she makes a mistake, she is simply told that she should not do this in her

in-laws' house.
