BORKAR GROUP: A Vision For Success
More than a century of retail experience has turned the BORKAR GROUP from a tiny kiosk into a business empire in Goa, as members of the younger generation continue to begin new ventures. The group has grown to include one of India’s top packaging companies, Goa’s first self-service retail store chains, and one of the state’s reputed real estate companies. With its latest venture into hospitality, the Margao-based Borkar Group is raring to take on the challenges of the future.
In 1910, Shripad Borkar opened a kiosk selling ghee and snuff. More than 100 years later, their retail business is going from strength to strength in the form of Borkars Super Stores. But the family’s tryst with business does not stop at retail.
In 1944, the next generation of Borkars – the late Shripad Borkar’s four sons – began a printing press as a diversification to their existing retail business. This business further expanded in 1980 when they ventured into offset printing and packaging, following which the family also stepped into real estate.
Speaking for the Group, Chinmay Borkar, Director of Akar Realty, the real estate arm of Borkar Group says, “The Borkars have always had the entrepreneurial spirit in them. Whenever members of a new generation joined the group, they ventured into at least one new business. We like to challenge the status quo and venture into businesses where we see a gap in the market.”
