The sixth generation Shetmandrekar family from Mandrem’s chitrashala painstakingly make beautiful Ganesha idols for worship each year
It is that time of the year again, when our hearts are filled with immense joy and adulation for Lord Ganesha, as the sweet smells of jaggery ooze from decorated houses and the smoke from crackers clouds the streets.
The best chosen idol from artists is brought home with great pomp, something that is love at first sight. But the making of these idols is intense work, as they are to be moulded according to the customers’ requirements. The famous Shetmandrekar brothers from Mandrem, all of whom are excellent artists, have innumerable experiences from their lineage in moulding.
As one drives down to Mandrem in North Goa, statues of Sai Baba and beautifully moulded tulsi vrindavans are spotted along the roadside. Enquires revealed that the four houses around belong to the Shetmandrekar brothers.
