Release of commemorative postage stamp marks Vasantrao Dempo’s 100th birth anniversary
Centenary celebrations of late Vasantrao Srinivasa Sinai Dempo, founder chairman of Dempo Group of Companies, was held on his birth anniversary on March 04 with the release of a commemorative postage stamp by the Department of Posts and the inauguration of the new Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Science, Commerce and Arts at the new Cujira Integrated Educational Complex in Bambolim.
The honours were done by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar with Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’souza, South Goa MP Nahendra Sawaikar, Chairman of EDC Ltd Sidharth Kunkalienkar, chairman of Dempo Group of Companies Shrinivas Dempo, Trustee Pallavi Dempo, Chief Postmaster General Ashok Dash and others.
Addressing the audience, Chief guest Parrikar stated that primary education is best imparted through the mother tongue. “Education should not be only bookish knowledge but education should impart value education,” he said.
Parsekar added that the new Cujira Integrated educational Complex has created an environment conducive for boosting the education system in the state which was named the ‘best state for education’. He appealed to all school administrations in the city to move their premises as early as possible. “The school buildings act as social infrastructure for transformation of individuals and their communities through learning, inclusivity and outreach,”said Parsekar.
Shrinivas Dempo said that the birth centenary of his grand-father late Vasantrao Dempo is in itself a date which reflects a century of path-breaking events both entrepreneurial and societal. “I believe that giving back to the community is one of the most important things a person must do. We have two institutions of the trust that are already half a century old and now providing state-of-the-art higher secondary school infrastructure representing ambience and teaching,” he said.
Vasantao Dempo was conferred the Padma Shri in 1991 by former President of India R Venkataraman. He is also one of the few Goans to receive the rare distinction of a postage stamp in
his honour.
